Only one month to go until Mike and Mackenzie are married! they met on the University of Missouri campus, so we headed there for their engagement session. Here are a few of my favorite pictures from our campus stroll. Check back in June for pictures from Mike + Mackenzie’s wedding!

congratulations, whitney + shane! these two were a textbook case for our “Silver Nuggets” . . . those little pieces of advice we share with clients to help their day AND their pictures turn out beautifully. Here’s what we mean. One of our favorite silver nuggets (future brides and grooms take note!) is this: get ready in a comfortable (i.e. not cramped and cluttered) light-filled space. And we were completely giddy with excitement that whitney chose to dress in our STUDIO!!! It was only a block away from the First Christian Church where she and shane were to be married, so it was perfect! Whitney brought her grandma’s mirror and her grandpa’s bible and all of her bridesmaids to our studio. SO MUCH FUN. and SO MUCH LIGHT!

These next series of shots were all taken in our studio before the ceremony (and hey, can you see evidence of another silver nugget? it’s this one: dress for comfort and joy  . . . i.e. shoes you can dance and spin in and feel like you’re walking on air ALL NIGHT LONG . . . be sure to check out whitney’s choice of shoes):

another silver nugget: step away from the altar for family, group and couple portraits. And boy did they! whitney and shane were raised on farms and now work in the agriculture industry, so they were particularly eager to get out to the countryside for photos. these first few shots were taken outside the church, and several following were near their reception site (the Knights of Columbus Hall):

and yet another silver nugget: your day your way! don’t be afraid to make your wedding unique to you. we love shooting “firsts” . . . as in: this was the first time a SilverBox bride has give a groom this on his wedding day . . .

and yet another silver nugget: twinkle and glow! Be sure to add special lights and other touches that transform your reception hall into an even more lovely space and that give the photographer some extra light to play with:

Love LOVE LoVE this time of year! i met amanda + gary at cedar creek resort (the site of their upcoming june wedding) to make some engagement pictures. I cannot wait to photograph this wedding! . . . picture a creekside tent for the ceremony and a dance floor patio perched overlooking the lake at sunset. aahhhh! congrats you two . . . see you in june.

 There are so many reasons why ginny and david won us over:

a sweet, compassionate, delightful couple!

Ginny is a pediatric oncology nurse at a Children’s hospital in Dallas and is pursuing a nurse practitioner degree at Texas Woman’s University. She describes herself as romantic, ambitious and thrifty (and we say “what an awesome combination of qualities!”). She and David have been together for over six years. The three words they chose to depict their relationship were: unconditional, blessed, compassionate. We had a hunch that we were falling for this couple, and comments sent in support of ginny and david sealed the deal:

one comment in particular summed it up for us: “[Ginny] has been the most caring nurse (and favorite) to my cancer kid and many other kids. She is genuine through and through. She doesn’t work her job but actually ministers to these sick kids by giving them JOY! Wagon rides, play dates, slushies, and big smiles. If I had the money I would give her the dream wedding but I don’t. So PLEASE pick Ginny and David! We want to partake in the down-home celebration. The sooner she gets married, the sooner she can have kids of her own to love on!”

a DIY dream-come-true vision for the day

we particularly appreciated ginny and david’s emphasis on their wedding being truly memorable AND fun for their guests. here’s how the two described their vision: “We really want our family, friends, and loved ones to have a fun and memorable time on our special day. We visualize a romantic outdoor ceremony. A cocktail hour with cute DIY mason jars, lemonade, mint mojito’s, several entertaining activities for guests throughout the night including polaroid guestbook, huge canvas with acrylic paint, some softball equipment to entertain the kids. Casual standing buckets for cokes and beer with delicious Texas BBQ catering by Rudy’s. When guests are ushered upstairs for the reception they will be mesmerized by the 5000 sq ft barn with chandeliers and whimsical floral centerpieces. All followed by a lot of celebrating and dancing of course!”

location, location, location

ginny and david painted a delightful picture of their wedding’s location (we are smitten with the combination of a rustic barn, a porch, fields, trees and chandeliers!): “Howell Family Farms has a cozy cottage with a wrap-around porch, a beautiful outdoor ceremony area with tall trees, an elegant two-story rustic barn adorned with chandeliers for the reception, and a spacious lush green field with a little league baseball diamond perfect for memorable wedding activities, cocktail/refreshments hour, and a surprise [we could ruin the surprise, so we're leaving this blank . . . you'll have to tune into the Silver Lining AFTER Ginny + David's wedding to hear more!] for guests.”

thanks to the folks who participated in our first ever “headshot days” event! we photographed theater professionals from the independent actors theatre, a beauty pageant winner, and small business owners (including the design powerhouse one canoe two, and open studio pilates). for those of you who need head shots (and who doesn’t?!) . . . we’ll do it again in the fall. stay tuned . . .
